José Martí House or Finca El Abra

Address: Highway Siguanea km. 1½. Isla de la Juventud
Telf:
396206

Declared a National Monument. It is 2 miles from Nueva Gerona, on the road to Hotel El Colony.

It was a warm refuge for Cuban apostle José Martí, during 1870 when he was 17 years old, after having suffered a brutal sentence in La Cabaña

El Abra, located in a kind of opening between two mountains of Sierra de las Casas, shows how life and customs were in those days. It is preserved in excellent condition, kitchen, barn, garage, patio, as well as the old aqueduct that supplied water to the building. You can see even the old rooms and furniture and documents explaining the experiences of José Martí in the island, where he stayed for two months and five days, occupying the first room of the second section of the residence. You can also see some of his personal belongings.

He was kindly hosted by Jose Sarda , the owner of the property that was built in 1869. He became interested Marti, who was very ill for the torture of the shackle and eye burns caused by lime dust from the quarry of San Lazaro in Havana where he was forced to work from sun rise to sun set . The pardon of his sentence was granted in exchange for his confinement on the island, so Jose Sarda decided to bring him home and cared of him as his own son, until he was deported to Spain.

Sarda was a friend of Governor General of Cuba, had been appointed Knight of Roses and was very respected by the officials of the Colony.

Young Marti was recovering his health and lived with the family of Sarda as a guest, not as a prisoner. Here Marti gave educational lectures to the children of the house, wrote and helped Sarda with his correspondence and business.

He had just an obligation, like all political deportees sent to the island, to be present at the roll call every Sunday at 9 am in the village square.

Every December 18th his short stay in this Isla is commemorated
