On February 24, 1971 the museum was officially open by Mr. Antonio Nunez Jimenez, president of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba.
In the beginning it had several showrooms as:
History of the Island, its archeology and aboriginal paintings, colonization, evolution, their economic, social and cultural development.
These exhibitions lasted about 6 years.
Since 1977 the museum began to enlarge their collections and its facilities were expanded such as astronomy and planetarium; and others about zoology, botany, geology, etc...
Here is located one of the four planetary existing in Cuba. In this installation you will enjoy the description of constellations and related legends.
The museum also has several specific tasks such as:

Conservation and protection of flora and fauna, natural resources and local environment.

It makes researches and disseminates and promotes the activities of the museum.
